The  "OTA  or Officers Training Academy Chennai" is a premier institute of the India Army which traind Men and Women into officers for the "Short Service Commission (SSC)" into the Indian Army. This institute holds a prestigious importance as it has been providing able officers to Indian Army since a long time. The main difference between the IMA and the OTA is that IMA only trains men for Permanent Commission , while the OTA trains both the men and women for Short Service Commission. The Academy is located in the outskirts of Chennai, about 15 kms away from the Chennai Central Railway Station along the GST Road in Chennai. OTA Chennai is spread over an area over 750 acres (3km).

The history of the OTA begins with the establishment of Seven Officers Training Schools in India between 1942-1945 to meet a huge demand for officers in the Indian and Commomwealth Armies during the World War II. However, these schools were closed down at he end of the war.

Then came the year 1962, following the Sino-Indian War , the ongoing war lead India to identify the need to expand the number of officers for the conduction of effective operations. Two Officers Training Schools (OTS) were established in Pune and Madras (noe known as Chennai) to train officers for Emergency Commission into the Army. The process of establishing schools was begun in September 1962. The Chennai School was inaugurated on 15 January 1963, for the nation by Brigadier Ram Singh as its first Commandant. The Pune school was on a short run and was closed in 1964. However , the school in Chennai continued its journey to operate and on 2 February 1965, it obtained the sacntion to shift its focus from Emergency Commission to train officers for the Short Servicer Regular Commission.

The Short Service Regular Commission has evolved into the Short Service Commission, and the OTS has continued to train officers for these commissions. The school was granted permanent status in 1985. On 1 January 1988, the school was renamed as the Officers Training Academy (OTA), on a par with the National Defence Academy(NDA) and Indian Miltary Academy (IMA).
The first batch of 25 women to be commissioned as officers into the Army were trained at the OTA, with training commencing on 21 September 1992.
Cadets are organised in six companies. Meiktila, Naushera, Kohima, Jessami, Zojila & Phillora.

The Commandant of the Officers Training Academy is the overall in-charge of all the functioning of the Officers Training Academy, Chennai. The Commandant of the College is a three-star rank officer (Lieutenant General) from the Indian Army.
