CDS Gen Bipin Rawat, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, YSM, SM, VSM, ADC is a four star general of the Indian Army. He is currently serving as the Chief of Defence Staff of India. On 30 Dec 2019, he was appointed as the first (CDS) Chief of Defence Staff of India. Prior to CDS, he served as the 27th Chief of Army Staff as well as he was the Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee.

Early Life and Education

 General Bipin Rawat was born on 16 March 1958 in pauri, Uttarakhand. He belonged to a Hindu Garhwali Rajput family. His family had been serving inthe Indian Army for several generations, and his father Laxman Singh Rawat was also an army officer and got retired at the rank of Lieutenant General. Rawat studied at teh Cambrian Hall School in Dehradun and then he was shifted to the St. Edward's School in Shimla. Fortunately he was able to join the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and then the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, where he was awarded the prestigious "Sword of Honour".

Besides this, he is also a graduate of the (DSSC) Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and the Higher Command Course at the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. From his tenure at the DSSC, he has a MPhil degree in Defence Studies as well as diplomas in Management and Computer Studies from University of Madras. In 2011, he was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy by Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut for his research on military-media strategic studies.

Military Career

General Rawat was commissioned into his fathers unit , the 5th battalion of 11 Gorkha Rifles on 16 December 1978. He has got much experience in high-altitude warfare and spent ten years conducting Counter-Insurgency operations.

He commanded 
  • A company in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir as a Major
  • 5th battalion of 11 Gorkha Rifles as a Colonel in Kibithu
  • 5 sector of Rashtriya Rifles in sopore as a Brigadier 
  • Multinational Brigade ina Chapter VII mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) where he was awarded the Force Commander's Commendation.
  • General Officer Commanding 19th Infantry Division (Uri) as Major General
  • III Corps, headquarters in Dimapur as Lieutenant General
He also held staff assignments which include
  • Infrastructural tenure at the Indian Military Academy (Dehradun)
  • General Staff Officer Grade 2 at the Military Operations Directorate
  • Logistics staff secretary of a Re-organised Army Plans Infantry Division (RAPID) in central India
  • Colonel Military Secretary and Deputy Military Secretary in the Military Secretary’s Branch
  • Senior Instructor in the Junior Command Wing
  • He also served as the Major General General Staff (MGGS) of the Eastern Command.

 During his career of 37 years , he has been awarded for gallantry and many distinguished service with the 
  • Param Vishisht Seva Medal
  • Uttam Yudh Seva Medal
  • Ati Vishisht Seva Medal
  • Yudh Seva Medal
  • Sena Medal
  • Vishisht Seva Medal
  • COAS Commendation on two occasions 
  • The Army Commander’s Commendation. 
On 1 January 2016, Rawat assumed the post of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) Southern Command. After a short period, on 1 September 2016, he assumed the post of Vice Chief of Army Staff. 

On 17 December 2016, the Government of India appointed him as the 27th Chief of the Army Staff, superseding two more senior Lieutenant Generals, Praveen Bakshi and P. M. Hariz. On 31 December 2016, he took office of Chief of Army Staff as the 27th COAS.

He is the third officer from the Gorkha Brigade to become the Chief of the Army Staff, after Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and General Dalbir Singh Suhag.

General Rawat was also inducted to the United States Army Command and General Staff College International Hall of Fame in United States in the year 2019. He is also the honorary General of Nepalese Army. He also played a significant role in various important missions like  1987 Sino-Indian skirmish,  UN Mission in Congo and 2015 Myanmar strikes.
